September, 2009 | The UN Committee on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD) has called on the Chinese authorities to “carefully consider the root causes” of the protests which erupted on the Tibetan Plateau in 2008. UN-CERD also expressed concern at “reports alleging the disproportionate use of force against ethnic Tibetans” and called for the “guaranteed humane treatment” of those arrested in connection with the protests. August, 2009 | Human Rights in China (www.hrichina.org) submitted a parallel NGO report to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD), which identified serious challenges faced by China’s rural ethnic groups, including Tibetans. March 10, 2009, marked the 50th anniversary of the Tibetan Uprising in Lhasa that led to the Dalai Lama’s escape from Tibet, and the first anniversary of an unprecedented wave of overwhelmingly peaceful protests that swept across the Tibetan plateau, to be met by a violent crackdown.
Since March 10, 2008, the Chinese government has engaged in a comprehensive cover-up of the torture, disappearances and killings that have taken place across Tibet combined with a propaganda offensive against the exiled Tibetan leader, Nobel Peace Laureate the Dalai Lama.
