On October 17, 2007, His Holiness the Dalai Lama was awarded a Congressional Gold Medal by the Congress and the President of the United States of America. Following the ceremony, the Dalai Lama spoke to a crowd of over 15,000 people from the steps of the west lawn of the Capitol Building, in Washington, D.C.
